Weeding Control: Don’t propagate…eliminate!

Many homeowners are surprised to learn that pulling weeds can sometimes make them spread faster.

Certain weeds propagate through underground roots or rhizomes, and when they’re pulled improperly, those roots break apart — creating multiple new plants instead of removing the problem.

Here are a few common Michigan weeds that can spread when pulled incorrectly:

  • Canada Thistle – spreads aggressively through deep, creeping roots
  • Horsetail (Scouring Rush) – ancient plant with extensive underground systems
  • Creeping Charlie (Ground Ivy) – spreads through stolons and root fragments
  • Bindweed – deep root systems that regenerate when disturbed

In these cases, hand-pulling without the right technique or follow-up treatment can actually propagate the weed rather than eliminate it.

Once your weeds are under control, it’s time to look at pre-emergent options to keep your gardens clear.

Proper mulching is one of the most effective tools in weed prevention and plant health. Benefits include suppressing weed growth, regulating soil temperature, retaining moisture and improving soil structure over time.

However, mulch must be applied at the correct depth. Too little won’t suppress weeds; too much can suffocate plants and invite disease.

Pre-emergent treatments are next up!  They work below the surface, stopping weed seeds from germinating before they ever break through the soil.  When used correctly and timed properly, gardens stay cleaner longer and less hand weeding is required.

This proactive approach is a cornerstone of professional garden care.
